Vahe’s Interview
I sit up a little straighter as Vahe enters the room.
Honoria Ravena: Thanks for meeting with me again.
(Vahe sinks into the chair across from me): Yeah, about that. Isn’t everything people need to know about me in the book you wrote? I mean, why are we doing this interview?
(I arch an eyebrow.) Yes, everything people need to know about you is in the books, but I want your views on a few other things. And it’s for promotional purposes. I just had this conversation with your King over the phone. He said you would work with me.
(He sighs.) Well, if he said I would work with you, I guess I’d better.
HR: My thoughts exactly.
(His eyes narrow): Careful human. I know where you sleep.
(I glare right back): Careful vampire. You’re King likes me.
(His seriousness breaks and he smiles.) I like you most of the time too. You are one of the few humans who just doesn’t flinch. I wish I could scare you. Should we get on with this shit?
HR: Yes. I have two interviews to do today. How do you feel about this whole thing? About having your story told? Don’t you feel it violates the very law you uphold?
V: When the King first approached me about this I definitely didn’t like the idea, and I was surprised he would allow it. But the king is an enigma, wrapped in a mystery, encased in a bullet. You’ll never understand him, and you’d better do what he says, or he’s likely to kill you. And he has a point about these books. They’ll be marketed as fiction, and even if you claim they’re true, people would just think you were bat shit crazy.
HR: Do you have any idea why he’d want your stories told?
V: Did you miss the enigma wrapped in a mystery part? He probably just gets a kick out of the thought of the truth about vampires being right under peoples noses. He’s got a sick sense of humor.
HR: You love your new wife quite a bit don’t you?
V: Of course.
HR: What about her made you love her?
V: She’s tough, even when she believes she can’t win, she won’t back down. She’s just so determined, and beautiful and vulnerable at the same time. I don’t know anyone as gentle as she is. Most of the women I know are fellow Watchers and they are tough as nails and full of hate, just like we men are.
HR: Your wife, Nat, is pregnant now, isn’t she?
V: Yeah, I don’t know how that happened.
(I arch an eyebrow.)
(Vahe flashes me a fat grin.) Alright, so I know how it happened technically, but vampire pregnancies are so rare, it was a big shock.
HR: Are you happy about the baby?
V: Ecstatic. I always wanted kids. I never thought I’d have any. It does give my life and added complication though.
HR: What do you mean?
V: Well, bringing Natalya into my life was a problem. I have a dangerous job. But Nat can defend herself for the most part. This baby won’t be able to. It… worries me.
HR: On that somber note, I think will wrap this up.
V: Thank God! I do have a new wife that I’d like to spend some time with.
HR: Have a good night.
V: Oh, I will.
