Shapeshifters are born with the ability to change into animals. Long ago, they had more than one animal form, but they became obsessed with purity of the lines. Inbreeding caused low birth rates, disease, and loss of magical abilities. They have abandoned their relationship with nature, corrupting themselves for money and power.

The Moon Fever was brought to European shapeshifters by barbarian invaders. Every once in a while, during a full moon, a shapeshifter will become ill. They temporarily lose their mind and go on a rampage. In this state they can infect humans.

These infected humans become wereanimals. They can change anytime they wish but are forced to shift during the full moon. They are hunted by the shapeshifters who believe they are impure. The Hunters would rather see them dead than have them contaminating their bloodline.

Accepted by neither side are the Carriers who harbor the Fever without the insanity. They can infect shapeshifters with the airborne disease, and through body fluid exchange, induce lycanthropy in humans. For this, they are eternally hunted by their own kind.
